The Emergency Medical Technician programme is designed for participants wishing to gain a certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician enabling them with advanced skills and knowledge. The course is designed for those as medical center operators, rescue personnel, firefighters, remote area medical operations, marine and industrial rescue personnel, offshore EMTs and trained EMS professionals seeking pre-hospital care and ambulatory skills.

This EMT training transition program is the introductory course for those wishing to pursue a career in prehospital emergency medicine. This course highlights the basic knowledge and skills necessary for individuals who wish to obtain international certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. The students will also have the opportunity to experience the prehospital setting from ride-along with a professional ambulance crew observing the workings out on the street to hospital attachment at emergency unit.

Course Content:
•    Anatomy and physiology
•    Primary assessments (Basic Life Support)
•    Patient assessment and history taking
•    Documentation of records & reports
•    Scene size up – kinematics
•    Airway : hypoxia, bag valve mask resuscitators, manually trigered ventilators, oropharyngeal airway, suction equipment
•    Advanced airway: laryngeal mask airway
•    Cardiovascular emergencies
•    Respiratory emergencies
•    Cardiac defibrillation – AED
•    Diabetes and altered mental states
•    Poisoning and overdoses
•    Shock and haemorrhage
•    Moving an dlifting patients
•    Environmental exposure
•    Soft tissue injuries
•    Chest injuries
•    Pharmacologyas required for local protocols
•    Inhaled analgesia (entonox/penthrane) plus any local protocol approved analgesia
•    Medication administration (injection procedures) as per local protocols
•    Head and spinal injuries
•    Musculoskeletal injuries
•    Patient transport and immobilisation : cervical immobilisation, kendrick extrication device, strecher & spinal boards
•    Introduction to triage
•    Holistic assessment

Upon completion of this course, students receive Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider Course Completion Card from American Heart Association (AHA) and certification from Australasian Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (AREMT) that is valid for two years.
